The Liberal world-view is always good for a laugh or two. J. Michael Straczynski gives us a chuckle or two in
the fourth issue of Marvel's Thor as the Asgardian hero journeys to Africa in order to save it from ... well, itself, it seems.
In this issue, titled "No Borders", Thor, in his human persona Dr. Donald Blake, is pulled out of the little Oklahoma hotel he's living in by Dr. Ernest Lereaux, a French doctor from '
Doctors without Borders'. Africa, it seems, is in dire need and Dr. Blake is the one to save the day.
The Doctor's without Borders group arrives at the Umeme Mungu Refugee Camp, in Dahran, Africa a
massive field of misery, disease and death, created by "a genocidal campaign of ethnic cleansing designed by the majority Ngare tribe ..." All this, naturally, is meant to bring to mind a very real place in Africa where a very real
genocidal campaign in currently underway.
The first bit of Liberal dogma that rears its ugly head is
a walk and talk Dr. Blake has with Dr. Lereaux:
Dr. Lereaux, "... the Ngare were content to do their killing with the traditional tools of machete, knife and rifle. From what I am hearing now, they have graduated to mortars and shoulder-mounted rockets and bombs purchased illegally from other countries. ..."
Dr. Blake, "So is the U.N. going to interevene?"
All good Liiberals know that if you want a genocide brought to an end you call in the United Nations becaue that organization did such a bang up job in
Rwanda, and elsewhere.
The dialog continues:
Dr. L, "One day they say yes, another no. Some governments want to arm the other tribes. they say that is the solution: Give those who are being killed the power to do back in equal measure what is done to them."
Dr. B, "If not that, then what is the solution?"
Dr. L, "Common sense, compassion. An act of God, perhaps."
Spoken like a true Frenchman. No military intervention, not a call for the US Marines. No. None of that. "Common sense" and "compassion". That will bring and end to genocide. And that has worked where, exactly?
Moments after this bit of Liberal tripe we are introduced to the
3 guards, a German, an American (if, that is, someone from San Francisco still qualifies as an American) and a Brit, tasked with keeping the camp safe. No sooner do we meet this three man international force than the camp comes under attack. Luckily for the camp the guards' common sense tells them to use guns. Also luckily for the camp Dr. Blake's alter ego is Thor, since the meager trio of armed guards is quickly overwhelmed.
Fighting ensues, and lives are saved from the forces of evil. With the battle over we learn that the trio of men with common sense are no mere mortals. They, also are Asgardian warriors, Fandral, Volstagg, and Hogun - the "Warriors Three" - for whom Thor has been searching.
Just as this foursome of Norse gods is about to follow the retreating bad guys, Ibo Abua, the leader of the Mangetu tribe, the people huddling in fear in the refugee camp, appears. Once again we get a load of Liberal gobbledy-gook on war, peace and race relations:
Ibo, "There is no purpose to be served by pursuing them. ..."
Thor, "But will they not return another day?" [A most reasonable question]
Ibo, "Almost certainly. And if you kill them all their brothers and fathers willcome another day, even more determined. And if you kill them all, then we commit the same genocide we are trying to escape ourselves.
Volstagg, "But there must be something strong arms can do!"
Ibo, "Strong arms, perhaps ... but not white arms."
Perhaps someone can explain to me why, in the Liberal world-view, this isn't considered racist.
Instead of chasing down the evil-doers, the very white Norse gods do what all Liberals do when two groups are fighting: They simply separate them. Thor, with his mighty hammer, cleaves a massive canyon into the African countryside; with the Mangetu tribe on one side and the Ngare tribe on the other.
I expected a hefty bit of America bashing when I heard that Doctors without Borders was going to make it into a Straczynski penned Thor tale, but it wasn't there. I will hand J. Michael that much. He does, however, fill this a mere 32 pages with loads of Liberal nonsense. As the character Ibo says toward the end, "It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen." Parents beware.
