Web 2.0 Doomed by the Recession

Jeremy Liew, writing at the Wall Street Journal, thinks the current economic issues will doom all but the biggest so called Web 2.0 companies. I think Mr. Liew is an old school marketing guy, who sees everyone as little more than consumers.

There are two words you won't see in Mr. Liew's article: trust and relationship. People want to do business with people the trust and with whom they have a relationship. Who would you go to to buy a car; someone you've known for years and who you hang out with or the big car dealer across town who can afford to massive ad buys?

Me?

I'd be calling my friend in a heartbeat. Now if my friend told me I'd get a great deal at Big Dealer across town, then I'd listen. But I'd start with my friend.

That is what Web 2.0, especially the exploding social media networking is really about.

Mr. Liew doesn't seem to understand that.
